Irritable Bowel Syndrome/
Back in my early 20’s I suffered with chronic pain in my stomach and at my waistline, severe bloating in my stomach which made me look about 6 months pregnant and constipation. It was a dull ache most of the time that would get worse at certain times. At the time, I was in so much pain that I couldn’t really pin point a pattern but looking back now it was when I was anxious or stressed and at hormonal changes during the month and when I was pregnant with my two children.
I went to the doctors constantly giving my symptoms but the Doctor didn’t seem to know what was wrong other than I was constipated. He would prescribe fibre gel and at times antibiotics because the pain I was experiencing at my waist was near my kidneys and he felt it maybe a kidney infection even though my urine samples were always clear.
It wasn’t until I had my first child, that the symptoms stopped. After a few years they return but this time the symptoms were not as bad. I could now see a pattern of symptoms and they occurred a week before my period and if I was anxious or stressed. This time I decided to take a holistic approach and went to see a energy healer. The healer was amazing spending a hour with her calmed my body totally down and my constipation was elevated, hence the bloating would go and the cramps were back to a dull ache.
I then was recommended to go and see a homeopath, which I did and this was the turning point for me. She prescribed some remedies for the acid reflux I was experiencing which calmed the whole of the digestive tract, she gave me two other remedies to calm my nervous system down and suggested I take peppermint oil, just one drop in some warm water daily to calm the gut. This was the only thing that stopped all pain for me.
After a few months of this treatment, my symptoms stopped and they only reoccur if I get very anxious or stressed. I also made some lifestyle changes where I changed my job from a legal secretary to training to become a massage therapist. (and hence my own holistic health business now) I started to exercise and another big benefit was meditation as it totally calms my nervous system down and hence my body.
Looking back now I think my IBS may have been triggered by the use of antibiotics that I had as a young child for tonsillitis which I got every few months. Antibiotics is one of the triggers as they change the gut flora in the digestive system causing bacterial overgrowth and killing off the good bacteria in the gut.
Now 20 years on from my diagnosis, IBS has become recognised as a disease and doctors are more aware of the symptoms and causes. So lets take a look at some of the causes of IBS today.
- Changes in the gut bacteria (lack of good gut bacteria)
- Antibiotics (overuse)
- Medications – such as omeprazole (which I was taking) used to treat heatburn can alter the intestinal barrier function and affect the intestinal microflora.
- Gut infections
- Food sensitivities and allergies. No1 food aggravation is Gluten. No2 is Lactose Intolerance.
- Changes in serotonin metabolism
- Hormonal fluctuations
- Leaky Gut Syndrome
I suffered for many years with IBS and know how debilitating it can be to feel constantly tired, be in constant pain, have sleep disturbances, feel sick and being sick, suffering bloating in the stomach looking 6 months pregnant, suffering with chronic constipation and not being able to go to work or socialise with friends because I felt so ill and so exhausted.
This all changed when I found homeopathy, exercise and mediation.
